Why We Don’t Recommend Re-Dyeing Pre-Bleached Wigs — Professional Advice from BrilliantWigs
One of the most common questions we receive from customers is:
“My wig looks beautiful, but can I change the color a little?”
As a professional wig manufacturer, our answer is clear — we do not recommend re-dyeing pre-bleached finished wigs. Below, we’ll explain why, and also share some safe guidelines for those who still wish to try color adjustments.
1. What Bleaching Does to Human Hair
To achieve very light shades like #613 or #60, we use industrial bleaching techniques to completely remove the natural melanin from unprocessed human hair, then tone it to the desired color.
This process is highly damaging to the hair structure. Although we apply various conditioning and industrial-grade oils to restore smoothness and shine, it’s important to understand that once hair is cut from the scalp, it loses its natural nutrient supply — it can no longer “heal” like growing hair.
As a result, bleached hair is already fragile, and any further chemical processing (like re-dyeing) will make it even weaker and more prone to breakage.

2. Understanding the Chemistry Behind Hair Dye
To support customers’ desire for personalized colors, we’ve conducted in-depth research on the chemical components of hair dyes.
In general, dye systems include two essential parts:
-
Colorant (Agent A) – provides the pigment that changes the hair color.
-
Developer (Agent B) – commonly known as hydrogen peroxide or “peroxide cream,” which helps open the cuticle and activates the color reaction.
In salons, you often see two bottles mixed together — “Color Cream A” and “Peroxide B.” On natural hair, each strand has intact cuticles that can be opened by peroxide, allowing pigment molecules to penetrate and oxidize inside the hair shaft.
3. The Key Difference Between Wig Hair and Natural Hair
For pre-bleached wig hair, the situation is entirely different.
During bleaching, most of the hair cuticle layer is already lifted or destroyed. That means hydrogen peroxide no longer has any cuticle to “open.” Instead, it simply over-oxidizes the hair fiber, making it dry, frizzy, and brittle.
In other words, the chemical mechanism that works for scalp hair does not work the same way for wig hair, and re-dyeing can cause irreversible damage.
4. Understanding Hydrogen Peroxide Concentration
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is the main active ingredient in developers. The concentration determines its oxidizing power. Here’s a quick reference table:
| Volume (Vol) | H₂O₂ Concentration | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Vol | ~3% | Gentle toning or mild color change |
| 20 Vol | ~6% | Standard hair dye and gray coverage |
| 30 Vol | ~9% | Deep bleaching or lifting color by 2+ levels |
The higher the concentration, the stronger the oxidation — and the greater the damage.
From our research and salon feedback, we found that hair quality degradation after dyeing is mainly caused by excessive peroxide, not the colorant itself.

5. BrilliantWigs’ Safe Dyeing Recommendation
If you still wish to experiment with color adjustment, we strongly recommend the gentlest approach possible:
-
Use 3% hydrogen peroxide (10 Vol) developer.
-
Mixing ratio: Colorant (A) : Developer (B) : Water = 1 : 0.3 : 0.7
-
Mix thoroughly with a whisk until creamy and smooth.
-
Apply evenly to the section you want to color.
-
Do not exceed 20 minutes of processing time, and always follow with a deep-conditioning treatment.
This formula minimizes chemical stress on the hair while allowing for a subtle tone adjustment.
6. Final Thoughts
At BrilliantWigs, we fully understand every client’s passion for individuality and beauty. However, from a professional standpoint, re-dyeing pre-bleached wigs carries high risk.
If you want a custom shade, we recommend letting our factory color it during production — using controlled techniques and professional-grade materials. This ensures a more accurate color result and preserves the hair’s integrity.
Every wig we produce is handcrafted to stay soft, natural, and long-lasting — because your confidence deserves only the best.
