What to Pay Attention to When Customizing a Wig

Since you’ve already chosen customization, you must pay attention to every detail to ensure the final wig truly meets your inner vision of “perfection.” However, many people lack customization experience and worry about making mistakes, so in this article I’ve tried my best to cover all the common details to watch out for. Whether you’re an individual customizing directly with a factory or a manufacturer communicating details with a client, this content will come in handy.

  1. Matching Hair Color:
If you’re customizing a full wig, color matching can be relatively flexible; however, for hair toppers or accessory products, the color must perfectly match your own hair color. The most common matching method is using a color swatch or color ring, but be aware that colors displayed on different devices or screens may vary, and even the shooting angle can affect color perception. The most accurate method is to send a sample of your own hair color to the factory so they can dye it accordingly—though this approach is relatively more costly.

  2. Confirming Hair Quality:
Synthetic hair, blended hair, permed hair, remy hair, and high-end virgin hair all vary in quality, and this directly affects the price of a custom product. Hair quality also determines the product’s lifespan and how well it can support different hairstyles and colors.
If you only want a transitional option or are experimenting with customization, you can choose synthetic, blended, or permed hair.
If you want a longer lifespan and a more natural appearance, go for remy hair.
If you want a long-lasting wig that can also be recolored in the future, choose virgin hair.
  3. Confirming Hair Length (Taking 16 inches as an example):
Many customers and manufacturers describe hair length differently—it can refer to the measurement from the top of the head to the ends, or you can specify different layer lengths when confirming your order. Naturally, the more generous the amount of hair used, the higher the cost will be.

  4. Confirming Hair Density:
Different densities create different levels of thickness. Some hairstyles require high-density hair for support—for example, dreadlock styles can use 150% density or even higher. If you’re only aiming for a natural look, a semi-finished wig (uncut and unstyled) with 130% density is recommended.
The higher the density, the thicker and heavier the hair will be, and the higher the price. It’s best to choose a density that suits you—higher density is not always better.

For men’s wigs, most products on the market are in the 90–110% density range. While this may seem lower than the recommended density for women’s wigs, it is actually very suitable and natural for men.
  5. Determining the Cap Size:
This is a crucial step in the customization process, as it directly affects the fit and comfort of the wig when worn. One of the main purposes of customization is to make the wig cap fit your head shape more precisely, so accurate measurements are especially important. It’s recommended to visit a professional salon for measurement or have a knowledgeable friend assist you. Measure the six key data points as shown in the diagram. Avoid measuring by yourself whenever possible, as self-measurement can easily lead to errors that affect the final result—unless you are already very experienced.

  6. Determining the Cap Construction:
The cap construction is another very meaningful part of customization. You can freely choose different materials and structures to form the entire wig cap according to your personal preferences. For example, some people like to add needlework (hand-tied) in the crown area to enhance the natural and realistic appearance of the parting; others prefer to add stretch mesh in the middle to back areas of the cap to improve fit and wearing comfort. Different cap designs provide completely different wearing experiences and visual effects, making the final product truly tailored to your real needs—truly “made just for you.”
  7. Other Details:
When customizing a wig, it’s important to confirm in advance whether you want any personalized styling treatments, such as bleaching the knots to create a more natural-looking parting, designing a natural hairline to enhance overall realism, allowing for free parting to make styling more flexible, or pre-perming, straightening, or creating specific styles according to your personal taste. These seemingly small choices can directly affect the final appearance and user experience of the wig and are key steps in creating a sense of uniqueness. It’s recommended to communicate every detail thoroughly before customization to avoid the hassle of later modifications.

Personally, I do not recommend bleaching the knots. Although it can lighten the roots and make the scalp look more realistic visually, it severely damages the hair roots, shortens the lifespan of the wig, and increases the risk of shedding. You need to carefully balance the “appearance” with the “longevity.”
